Vyasa Puja Offering by Shri Madhu Pandit Dasa:
nama om vishnupadaya krishna prestaya bhutale,
srimate bhaktivedanta swaminiti namine
namaste sarasvate deve gauravani pracharine
nirvishesha shunyavadi paschatya desha tarine
Dear Srila Prabhupada,
Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Your Divine Grace.
Your pastime on the planet has been a series of divine lessons that guide us in every step of our Krishna conscious journey.
One of these glories that have touched me deeply in recent years, is your compassionate concern for all jivas who are suffering in the darkness of ignorance. I look back to what would have been the destiny of millions of jivas, including me, rotting in this world, if you had not shown your loving compassion to humanity at large.
Although you were relishing the transcendental joy of pure Krishna bhakti every moment while in the holy dhama, you did not settle down to enjoy this spiritual wealth for yourself. You saw everyone as part and parcel of Krishna, and therefore deserving of being liberated from the misery of ignorance. It is the transcendental fruit of your great spiritual sacrifice alone that has manifested this mission on earth to share Krishna consciousness with the whole world. Millions today are beneficiaries of your labor of love and self-sacrifice.
In the matter of compassion towards humanity your character resembles the character of one of the great Mahajanas – Prahlada Maharaja.
In Srimad Bhagavatam (SB 7.9.43 – 44) Prahlada Maharaja prays to Narasimhadeva:
O best of the great personalities, I am not at all afraid of material existence, for wherever I stay I am fully absorbed in thoughts of Your glories and activities. My concern is only for the fools and rascals who are making elaborate plans for material happiness and maintaining their families, societies and countries. I am simply concerned with love for them.
My dear Lord Narasimhadeva, I see that there are many saintly persons indeed, but they are interested only in their own deliverance. Not caring for the big cities and towns, they go to the Himalayas or the forest to meditate with vows of silence [mauna-vrata]. They are not interested in delivering others. As for me, however, I do not wish to be liberated alone, leaving aside all these poor fools and rascals. I know that without Krishna consciousness, without taking shelter of Your lotus feet, one cannot be happy. Therefore I wish to bring them back to shelter at Your lotus feet.
In Chaitanya lila, Prahlada Maharaja incarnates as Vasudeva Datta and offers similar requests to Mahaprabhu. In Madhya lila verse 15.162 and 3 he prays:
jeevera duhkha dekhi' mora hrdaya bidare
sarva jeevera paapa prabhu deha mora shire
jeevera paapa lanaa muni karon naraka bhoga
sakala jeevera prabhu, ghucaaha bhava roga
My Lord, my heart breaks to see the sufferings of all the conditioned souls; therefore I request You to transfer the karma of their sinful lives upon my head. My dear Lord, let me suffer perpetually in a hellish condition, accepting all the sinful reactions of all living entities. Please finish their diseased material life.
Srila Prabhupada, you exemplify these feelings of the Mahajana, Prahlada Maharaja. You were very much moved by others’ miserable condition in this world. You are truly para dukha dukhi. If your heart was not filled with compassionate love for the suffering souls of this world, why would you leave the holy dhama and go to the western world to preach Krishna consciousness at an advanced age? And voluntarily decide to take the karma of the sinful lives of your disciples upon yourself? It is you genuine absolute compassion that attracted thousands of souls to surrender to you, from all over the world.
In letter to a disciple on July 11, 1969 you wrote:
You have asked if it is true that the Spiritual Master remains in the material universe until all of His disciples are transferred to the Spiritual Sky. The answer is yes, this is the rule. Therefore, every student should be very much careful not to commit any offense which will be detrimental to this promotion to the Spiritual Kingdom, and thereby the Spiritual Master has to incarnate again to deliver him. This sort of mentality will be a kind of offense to the Spiritual Master.
Only your absolute compassion, turned into kindness in your heart, is making you sacrifice your own spiritual luxury, even being ready to remain in this material world for the sake of liberating your disciples. Your spirit to save the conditioned souls in this world inspires the mood of self-sacrifice for coming generations of your disciples.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for your sacrifice and Krishna consciousness to this world.
Srila Prabhupada, you are fixed on the plane of advaya-jnana, non-dual consciousness. You are situated in the highest consciousness of oneness of everything and everyone with Krishna, as His inseparable energy expansions, existing for harmonious pleasure of Krishna and His expanded existence. Therefore you are worshipable as good as Krishna.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for introducing worship of your Deity in your temples and giving the knowledge of advaya jnana that it is not human worship but it is the worship of the supreme servitor God.
The perception of separation of everyone and everything from Krishna is the effect of the force of maya. Her job, as per the larger scheme of things, is to put the jivas in illusion. Thus giving an opportunity for the jivas to fight this illusion with guru’s help and give an opportunity to nurture their free will to lovingly serve Krishna. Vaishnava acharyas are the Lord’s agents who deliver a divine counterforce against maya and influence them to choose to connect everyone and everything to Krishna, through devotional service. This war goes on perpetually between maya and the pure devotees in this material world. You are the glorious current transcendental commander of the army of this divine counterforce on earth of devotional service to Krishna and you are empowering each and every soldier to fight this war. You are the true Jagad Acharya.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for making me a soldier in your glorious army of the Hare Krishna movement.
Srila Prabhupada, no one in the history of the modern world has countered the force of maya upon jivas to gift Krishna consciousness to millions of jivas. You teach that life has meaning and is not a ‘chance’ happening. You give the unique and sublime way for attaining that meaning of life – just by calling out the holy names of Krishna, joyfully singing, dancing and feasting and reading your books and sharing this joy with everyone.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for including me in this flood of mercy of joy from the spiritual world.
Through your life of preaching till the last breath, you have taught us to go beyond ourselves even in spiritual life. For ordinary jivas the idea of self-realization is all about ‘myself.’ It could be enlightenment for ‘myself,’ liberation for ‘myself,’ eternal life beyond birth and death for ‘myself,’ bhakti rasa for ‘myself,’ about ‘myself’ going back to Godhead to serve the Lord etc. Although one may start out as a neophyte by being spiritually selfish, one eventually has to expand his spiritual horizons beyond ‘Krishna for myself’ to ‘Krishna for all.’ You have demonstrated, as an acharya who sets example, that Krishna consciousness is not about merely achieving perfection for oneself. It is also about distributing all these gifts to every soul.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for planting such a broad universal vision in all of us.
While pushing everyone tirelessly to preach, preach and preach to expand the transcendental mission, you also constantly took care of the progress of each of our own spiritual development. You constantly reminded us the importance of mangala arati, Deity worship, offenseless chanting, kirtana, guru puja, hearing Srimad Bhagavatam and reading your books every day. You are the perfect master who alone could balance in your disciples the energy applied by them every day to purify themselves, and the energy in working for your transcendental mission. You explained that sadhana will feed the preaching and vice versa to strengthen each other.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for keep us spiritually secure through your morning program in this world of maya.
The academic world is baffled at the voluminous sublime literature that you produced in such a short time while simultaneously engaged in nurturing the growth of a worldwide spiritual and cultural organization. Without Krishna’s direct potency, Krishna shakti, incarnating in you, this would not have been possible. Therefore you are a shakti-avesha avatara of Lord Krishna. You are an incarnation of the shakti of the Lord. As you revealed on one occasion, Krishna Himself was writing through you in a suitable way for the modern world to understand the Absolute Truth. No wonder you, yourself, relished reading your own writings.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for manifesting the transcendental sound onto this earth planet.
You have created history both of this world and of the transcendental world by what you have done, not only during the few years of your manifested pastime, but also for what you are continuing to do for the future of this world through your writings and recorded lectures and conversations. By presenting the knowledge of Bhagavad-gita As it Is and Bhagavatam in a simple universal non-sectarian rational manner as Absolute Truth, you have attracted and influenced jivas all over the world and have made them embrace Krishna consciousness.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for saving me through your self-effulgent writing.
Srila Prabhupada, you stated that your legacy will be continued for the next ten thousand years. You have transcendentally toiled to create a foundation for centuries to come, in your writings. All that needs to be done, is to propagate your vani ‘as it is,’ generation after generation, and to facilitate a favorable spiritual atmosphere for jivas to follow your instructions by setting up embassies of the spiritual world in every town and village on this earth. And the movement will automatically grow when your mercy is delivered to all. The innocent of the world population will feel the touch of your divine compassion upon them. Our business is only to make Your Divine Grace available to the jivas in this world one way or the other, so they may feel your presence guiding them to the lotus feet of Krishna.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for leaving behind an invaluable legacy on earth for the world to cling on to.
Srila Prabhupada, the success for a disciple is in simply following the order of his guru. As for me, I have been struggling for decades, to be your strict follower and somehow become worthy of being a proper disciple. In spite of being still in the struggling stage, just to encourage me, you are mercifully giving now and then, the satisfaction of offering you some results of our work to expand your mission.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for your constant encouragement of giving me tiny successes to contribute to your mission every now and then.
There is no credit for me, whatsoever, for the inconceivable reciprocations that our group is receiving under my so-called leadership. Your Divine Grace is the real transcendental leader in the heart of all your followers working in this mission. You have taught us the concept of servant-leadership, wherein a Vaishnava leader is always in a mood of a servant of those whom he is leading through his duties as leader. For a Vaishnava, every other Vaishnava is a Prabhu, to be served in the position of directing and leading on your behalf.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for making me a servant of your dear servants.
However, there is one thing that I can claim I have got – the credit of being a recipient of your causeless mercy. I have received causeless mercy from you, in terms of enthusiasm, engagement and encouragement in serving your mission. I have received causeless mercy from you in the form of transcendental realizations within my heart that have brought inner peace and happiness and shelter and spirit of service of the Absolute Truth, Krishna. I do not see any cause originating from me for receiving all the wonderful inner gifts. I am eternally indebted to Your Divine Grace for all the eternal gifts that have been bestowed upon me. Without that I would be nothing but a rotten composting vegetable.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for releasing these eternal gifts within my heart.
As for the successes of your mission, they are due to the hard work rendered by so many of your sincere followers. By their kindness upon me, they have placed me as a front man for the service of receiving the credit from the outside world on your behalf. This year the Indian Government recognized the important service of Akshaya Patra by awarding the prestigious national award, Padma Shri. By bestowing this honor they have recognized your compassionate mission of feeding pure nutritious food, prasadam, to millions of children. This is a significant service done by the Government of India for the cause so dear to you -free prasadam distribution. Akshaya Patra is your mission, and we are simply trying to serve your vision through this wonderful program. With deepest humility and gratitude I once again dedicate the Padma Shri award at your lotus feet.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for giving us Akshaya Patra.
Your aspirations to see the Hare Krishna movement of Lord Chaitanya expand to every town and village through chanting, dancing and prasadam distribution are unlimited. I have experienced that these aspirations of Your Divine Grace are live and vibrating in this world. We simply have to synchronize our consciousness to link with your visions and serve them. By finding our mission in your divine vision, we can experience flood gates of mercy of opportunity and resources being opened by divine intervention. Akshaya Patra is an example of this amazing phenomenon.
Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for unlimited ecstatic opportunities to preach in this world.
I am fully convinced that the consciousness of trying to be your simple order carrier servant, is the only qualification that is required to receive that mercy. The mercy of devotional services is waiting to be unfolded in this world to usher in the Golden Age of the sankirtana movement. Though I know that is the only thing that is required, it is not easy to be a simple surrendered servant of Your Divine Grace.
I beg for causeless mercy, Srila Prabhupada, to free me from selfish gratification, mental speculation and subtle maya of doer-ship and proprietorship of the false material body and mind enveloping me. I am such a rascal and hypocrite that after surrendering this body and mind to you, I keep forgetting that fact and keep taking it back again and again for selfish gratification and mental speculation. Please save me from this hypocrisy. Only Your Divine Grace can compassionately teach me what is sincerity and purity and give me the strength to endeavor for it.
Srila Prabhupada, I have no hope other than begging and getting more and more of your personal mercy. Therefore, I beg you again and again, Srila Prabhupada, to please continue keeping your merciful glance upon me, so that I don’t fall into forgetfulness of all the wonderful experiences and realizations of Krishna consciousness that you bestow upon me.
Your fallen servant aspiring to be a proper disciple someday,
Madhu Pandit Dasa,
President, ISKCON – Bangalore.
